The Green Machines · Book Ten
Scamp
Scamp is Book Ten of The Green Machines, a children's picture book series by David Woods. The slowest machine in the depot, and the strongest friend you could have.

The slowest machine in the depot, and the strongest friend you could have.
Scamp the recovery truck is very, very, very slow. Snails overtake him. But when he lines up for the Muddlebury Mile against Polly, Ferdy and Scotty, the three fastest machines in the village, the race does not go quite the way anybody expected. A tortoise-and-hare story where the slowest machine stops to help everybody, and still crosses the line first.
What is it about?
Being fast is fun, but it is not everything. Keep going, stop for a friend, and you will get there in the end.

Which real vehicle is Scamp based on?
Real Scamp is a Scammell Pioneer, built in Watford, England, between 1927 and 1945. His top speed was just 24 miles an hour, but his winch could drag a whole tank out of a swamp. His back wheels sit on a rocking beam so each can lift two feet in the air, and he was nicknamed the Coffee Pot because of the round tank on top of his radiator.
